Information for Attendees (hotels, airports, etc.)

image4416.jpgThe implementation of Superpave technology in the United States is the result of a $50 million SHRP research effort that was used to develop performance based specifications to relate laboratory analysis to field performance. The course is designed to give hot mix asphalt industry and various agency personnel a better understanding of the materials specifications, test procedures, and general mix design requirements for a Superpave volumetric mix design.

Goals and Objectives

The purpose of this 3 1/2-day workshop is to provide a basic understanding of the Superpave mix design process and hands-on training using Superpave. Upon completion, the attendees will be able to develop a Superpave volumetric mix design in their laboratories. If desired, this course can be used to obtain certification as a mix designer for the GA DOT.

Program Content

This course consists of 3 1/2 days of intensive lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on training on Superpave volumetric mix design procedures. The course will be split between classroom lectures and hands-on work on the Superpave equipment in the laboratory. The objective of the course is to provide project engineers, testing personnel and inspectors with an understanding of the steps and testing associated with the development of Superpave Mix Design. Approximately 1 1/2 days will be spent in the classroom and 2 days in the laboratory.

A brief outline of the course follows:

Lecture:

  • Overview of Superpave
  • Superpave binder testing and specification
  • Superpave aggregate testing and requirements
  • HMA volumetric analysis
  • Superpave mix design
  • Moisture susceptibility testing
  • Impact of mix design on HMA performance and construction

Laboratory:

  • Demonstration of binder testing procedures
  • Aggregate tests associated with Superpave
  • Volumetric mix design using the Superpave gyratory compactor
  • Moisture susceptibility testing

Materials

Each participant will be provided a copy of the Superpave binder and mixture specifications, a binder containing a print-out of all of the PowerPoint presentations, and a CD containing the same.

Fees, Refunds, & Deadline

The registration fee includes the training program, course materials, and breaks. The optional Ga DOT Certification test is $100 in addition to the course fee; the test will be given on Friday after the course has ended.
Pre-payment is required, and must be received no later than 10 days prior to the start date of the course begins. Cancellations made up to 10 days prior to the start date of the course will result in a complete refund of registration fee. No refunds will be provided for a cancellation after that date. Please register no later than 10 days prior to the start of the course, so we can have enough materials on hand and have nametags created.

The costs for housing, food and transportation are the responsibility of each participant. NCAT will assist the participant in locating suitable hotel accommodations.

Funds can be made available for state DOT personnel through the Southeast Superpave Center to attend this course. Please contact your State Materials and Research Engineer for further information.

Eligibility

NCAT will accept applications from any individual involved in the HMA paving industry. To get the most out of the course, it is recommended that the attendee have some experience with the Marshall or Hveem mix design procedures.

Continuing Education

The course will provide 2.8 CEUs or 28 Professional Development Hours.

Location

This course will be conducted at NCAT's research facility in Auburn Technology Park, Auburn, Alabama. Hotel accommodations are close by.
