This
textbook is a direct result of the concern of U.S.
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) contractors and the National
Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) about the lack
of material on asphalt technology available to
engineering students in American universities and
colleges and to technicians in technical schools.
In fact, two of the principal educational activities
of the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT)
have been directed toward (1) providing the opportunity
for professors currently on U.S. Civil Engineering
faculties to learn more about asphalt technology
by attending an annual summer course offered at
NCAT, and (2) preparing a book suitable for use
in college courses in asphalt technology.
The primary subject of this first-ever textbook on asphalt technology is HMA. The topics covered include manufacture of asphalt cement and aggregates, design of HMA mixtures, characterizing HMA in terms of engineering properties, construction, performance, and maintenance and rehabilitation of aging HMA surfaces. This book has been prepared for use by engineers; however, it has much to offer technicians in advancing their understanding of the topics covered in the book.
This textbook is titled "Hot Mix Asphalt Materials, Mixture Design and Construction". It has been authored by Roberts, Kandhal, Brown, Lee, and Kennedy.
